Gold Country is a stock-manipulation game set during the California Gold Rush. Players buy shares in competing mining companies, develop those companies on a hex map, and use their influence to improve promising holdings or burden investments held by rivals. Mine values rise and fall as the landscape develops, while company abilities create asymmetric opportunities for clever chains of actions. Shares can be sold when their market value looks strongest, but waiting too long risks another player changing the company’s prospects. The game ends as the gold veins are discovered, and the player with the greatest total wealth wins. Gold Country reworks Reiner Knizia’s Spectaculum with a new setting, revised development system, and variable setup.
