This 1991 Mayfair edition of Cosmic Encounter casts every player as an alien species whose unique power bends a fundamental rule. On each encounter, the destiny deck points the offensive player toward an opponent; both sides commit ships, invite allies, and secretly select encounter cards. An attack can become a direct clash, a negotiate card can open a deal, and the table talk before the reveal is often more important than the numbers. Successful colonies bring a player closer to victory, but alliances mean several players can advance together and betrayal is always possible. Mayfair’s edition reorganized and expanded the classic system, with a large roster of powers and support for its period expansions. The rules remain compact compared with the interactions they create: every combination of alien abilities changes the political landscape, ensuring a volatile game of brinkmanship, temporary friendship, and memorable exceptions.
