Combat! Volume 1 is a purpose-built solitaire tactical wargame about man-to-man fighting in Normandy. The player commands named American soldiers while a card-driven system controls German forces. At the start of a turn, a friendly initiative card is committed and orders are assigned to each character; alerted enemies then receive AI cards and order markers of their own. The turn resolves across four impulses, allowing movement, fire, morale effects, wounds, and changing tactical situations to unfold in programmed sequence. Enemy strength and deployment are not fully known, so scouting, fields of fire, terrain, and flexible orders matter as much as dice results. Four large maps, hundreds of counters, displays, and fourteen scenarios cover attacks, defenses, rescues, artillery threats, and last stands. The second printing updates artwork, counters, rules, and scenario materials. Sessions are substantial, but variable forces, events, scenario options, and the individual identities of soldiers give the system a strong narrative arc and long solo replay life.
